You have now reached the "Horcas Battery." With the introduction of gunpowder and artillery, the design of medieval fortresses had to change drastically. Walls began to extend outward through bastions like this one to increase the firing range. There are other innovations here that alter the classic look of a medieval castle.

Notice the increased thickness of the walls; they are usually made of earth covered with stone or brick. They are also built with a sloping profile to better absorb and deflect the impact of enemy projectiles. New elements were added, such as the sentry boxes for constant surveillance, while the old battlements disappeared, replaced by the embrasures where the artillery pieces were installed.

Now, we will continue our ascent along a defensive ramp built in the modern era. After passing through several gates, we will emerge onto the upper esplanade, where the original medieval fortress stands.
